Early Cancer Detection in Pacific Grove, CA
Cancer is the most common cause of death in dogs, and finding it early can open up more options for care. At Pacific Grove Animal Hospital, we encourage early detection through regular exams, attention to new lumps and bumps, and the OncoK9® multi-cancer screening blood test for dogs.
Understanding OncoK9 Screening
OncoK9 is an early cancer detection blood test for dogs, done with a simple blood draw. It screens for signs of multiple types of cancer, which can help find cancer before a dog shows symptoms.
It’s important to know that OncoK9 is a screening test, not a diagnosis. A positive result doesn’t confirm cancer on its own; it means further testing is needed to find out what’s going on. You can ask about adding OncoK9 to your dog’s routine wellness exam.

Who Should Be Screened
Screening is especially worth considering for dogs at higher risk of cancer.
Dogs Age 7 and Older
OncoK9 is recommended for all dogs age 7 and older. Older dogs have about nine times the annual cancer incidence of dogs under 7.
Younger Dogs of Higher-Risk Breeds
Some breeds are at higher risk of cancer, including the Beagle, Bernese Mountain Dog, Boxer, Flat-Coated Retriever, French Bulldog, German Shepherd, Golden Retriever, Great Dane, Irish Wolfhound, Labrador Retriever, Mastiff, Rhodesian Ridgeback, Rottweiler, Scottish Deerhound, and Siberian Husky. Younger dogs of these breeds may benefit from screening too.
How the Test Works
The test needs only a simple blood draw, so it can easily be added to a routine wellness visit.
If a Result Is Positive
A positive screening result leads to further testing. We’ll talk with you about the next steps for your dog.
